Scareware Scam

Symantec stated that in the past 12 months, online scammers have tricked over 40 million people to download a fake anti-virus software.

They use well designed pop-up adverts with well known software provider logo’s such as Microsoft and users click on them which directs them to download a free, fake anti-virus software stating that their computer is infected. Some users give out their credit card information to purchase a £60 version of the software and potentially loose their money.

The online criminals have taken it even further by locking up computer your and taking personal files such as pictures and documents. At this point, they then attempt to extort money from you by demanding that you pay more money to unlock your computer and personal files.
